At Les Powell School we believe it is very important to recognise and develop both academic and social achievements. Good behaviour and hard academic work bring about positive consequences. It encourages students in the classroom to participate in creating a positive learning environment. We want our students to feel confident about themselves, have high self esteem and most of all to feel happy and secure.
We place a high value on developing positive attitudes to learning and personal qualities. We constantly praise our students’ efforts and successes in the classroom and community. This scheme aims to recognise and improve students’ self esteem and educational achievements by:
- Promoting the importance of recognising students’ achievements among teaching staff and the community in general.
- Rewarding academic performance and progress.
- Encouraging positive behaviour, attitude and manners towards peers, teaching staff and community members.
- Making teaching staff aware of a positive reinforcement system to praise students’ academic progress, attitude and behaviour.
- Creating consistency across school about procedures and a reward system.
Procedures
The scheme operates in every class in all grades.
Teachers are encouraged to praise students with a Bronze Class Merit Award. If possible each student should be presented every term with at least one award. More than one award can be presented each week. An effort should be made by teachers to reward all students for a particular reason; the awards are not necessarily reserved for the more capable students. Awards can be presented for achievements in different aspects of educational life such as academic, social, behaviour, attitude, effort, etc. After a student has received 3 Bronze Class Merit Awards a Silver Grade Award is to be presented. After a student has received 2 Silver Grade Awards a Gold Principal Award is to be presented. All the awards will be standard and designed by the Welfare Portfolio in consultation with the school community. The certificates will include the student's name, the date of the award and the reason for the award. A published list of certificates awarded will appear in the LPS newsletter and school website.
The awards presented during the year will eventually lead/support application towards the ‘John Galea Outstanding Achievement Award’ for the senior and junior grades (student of the year award).
